Helena Balon

The General Clinical Nuclear Medicine Council (GCNMC) is a fairly new, but very active council. We have evolved from the GI Council in 2010, as our members perceived the need to provide a forum for practitioners interested in general nuclear medicine and to cover those subspecialty areas of NM not already under the sponsorship of other Councils or Centers (e.g., the Cardiovascular, Brain, PET, Oncology, Pediatric Councils).

The main purpose and mission of our council is to promote state-of-the art continuing medical education in areas of musculoskeletal, infection, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal and endocrine scintigraphy. Since 2010, we have sponsored and organized multiple Categorical Courses and CME sessions at each of the SNMMI Midwinter and Annual Meetings.

We recently (2012) revised and simplified our Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and have established a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 to recognize nuclear medicine physicians and scientists for their dedication and outstanding contribution to the advancement of clinical nuclear medicine and science.

We have an internship program, through which we would like to encourage young professionals (physicians, scientists, technologists) to become professionally active and engaged. This is a 2-year position; we are currently hosting our second intern. Interested young professionals should apply via the process posted on the SNMMI web.

Our council strives to provide excellent value for the membership. We can do so only if we hear from you, what your educational and other professional needs are. Please contact us with your thoughts and ideas so we can align future educational sessions with your needs. And, most importantly, please join our Council! If you are interested in serving on one of our committees, please contact Sabrina Robinson at SNMMI or any member of our Council’s leadership. We can improve only though input and fresh ideas form new members!

The GCNMC Lifetime Achievement Award is established to recognize those physicians and scientists who have distinguished themselves through a career dedicated to the advancement of patient care through the field of nuclear medicine.  These individuals will have provided outstanding contributions to the general nuclear medicine subspecialties including urogenital, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, endocrine and gastrointestinal imaging that have advanced the field to allow improved clinical diagnosis and patient care.

The Society recognizes the need for sub-specialty interests/expertise within the field of nuclear medicine and moleuclar imaging. Councils provide the expertise, professional networking and educational programs for nuclear medicine professionals in respective areas and serve as a resource for development and implementatin of Society policies.
