Accountable Care Organizations

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers, who come together voluntarily to give coordinated high quality care to their Medicare patients.

EHR Meaningful Use

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 authorizes CMS to provide financial incentives and penalties to eligible professionals and hospitals based on criteria along the road to becoming "meaningful users" of certified electronic health record (EHR) technology.

Generic Drug User Fees

FDA User Fee legislation was enacted into law; the exemption for PET drugs was included. President Obama signed the bill into law on July 9, 2012.

The Joint Commission

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.

Patient Release Criteria

The NRC is once again reviewing its regulation regarding outpatient treatment of patients with thyroid cancer. NRC staff were given a directive to determine the feasibility of studying exposure to the public from patients treated with I-131.

USP <797> 

Issued by U.S. Pharmacopoeia (USP), this regulation governs any pharmacy that prepares "compounded sterile preparations" (CSPs). Many pharmacies fit this description. Moreover, many large hospitals have several pharmacies--a main one and several satellite pharmacies--that will be affected.
