NRC Releases Regulatory Guide for Ensuring Radiation Exposure is ALARA

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has released Regulatory Guide 8.18: Information Relevant to Ensuring that Radiation Exposures at Medical Institutions will be As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).  The guide is directed specifically toward medical licensees and recommends methods that the staff of the NRC considers acceptable to maintain exposures as low as reasonably achievable at medical insititutions.  The guide addresses protection of persons other than employees - such as visitors and patients - that may be exposed to radiation from licensed radioactive material.

This  guide serves to describe and make available to the public methods that the NRC staff considers acceptable for use in implementing the regulatory framework that the NRC has established for medical licensees including 10 CFR 20.1101(b).  Regulatory guides are not substitutes for regulations, and compliance with them is not required.
