HIT Announces Proposed Stage 2 Rules

On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, Dr. Farzad Mostashari, national coordinator for health IT announced proposed stage 2 rules, which are said to be different from stage 1, which did not include radiology. The announcement was made to attendees of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting. The announcement that the viewing of images will be an optional menu item in the proposed stage 2 meaningful use requirements has been found to be popular.

The Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) submitted a comment letter to Dr. Mostahari expressing concern about absence of specific reference in the draft Stage 2 meaningful use recommendations for the access to medical images and reports through the electronic record as a priority.  SNM applauds the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT for recognizing the important role access to imaging plays in coordination of care.

The stage 2 requirements are to take effect in 2014, and the final stages will take place in the summer of 2012. The stage 1 requirements will still be in effect during 2013 and in the transition phase of 2014.
